WORLD CUP
Australia
|
|
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT |
The 2003 World
Cup was hosted by Australia. The IRB changed the qualifying
back to the 8 quarter finalists of the previous World Cup
who get automatic entry. The other 12 places was filled by
Canada, United States, Uruguay, Japan, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga,
Namibia, Ireland, Italy and first-time qualifiers Georgia.
Instead of having 5 groups of 4 nations, the IRB went back
to 4 groups with 5 nations with only the top two positions
in the group qualifying for the quater-finals.
England became the first Northern Hemisphere nation to win
the World Cup. As with the final in 1995, this time Jonny
Wilkinson kicked a drop goal in the dieing seconds of
extra-time to win the match, and with it the Webb Ellis
Trophy. |
