Power
eventually trumped panache in a closely contested 14-10
battle in Toulouse.
The much-vaunted Romanian pack began strongly, but a string
of errors prevented the Eastern Europeans from achieving any
inroads. The Portuguese were fired up for this clash,
proving more tenacious at the breakdown and in defence and
it was this fighting spirit that often forced the turnover.
Os Lobos also did well to pin the Romanians in their own
half. Stealing the ball at the line-out, captain and hooker
Joaquim Ferreira eventually drove over from point blank
range. Duarte Pinto kicked the conversion and another bout
of Romanian ineptitude and fantastic Portuguese defence kept
the score to 7-0 at the break.
The Oaks stuck to their forward-oriented game and eventually
wore down the defence when replacement hooker Marius Tincu
crossed in the 63rd minute. At this stage, it appeared the
Portuguese would finally crack.
Portugal received a penalty in the 69th minute and didn’t
forgo the opportunity to break the 7-7 deadlock. Replacement
Gonçalo Malheiro goaled the kick under extreme pressure and
kept his side in front for the final stretch.
But Florin Corodeanu scored after another patient build up
by the Romanians. Portugal attempted to run it from their
own line in the dying seconds, but it was to no avail and
they had to be content with the consolation of a bonus
point.
Romania - Tries: Marius Tincu, Florin Corodeanu. Conversion:
Valentin Calafeteanu, Dan Dumbrava.
Portugal - Try: Joaquim Ferreira. Conversion: Duarte Cardoso
Pinto. Penalty: Gonçalo Malheiro.
