Samoa survive States surge |
|
Back to Results
September 26th, 2007
Samoa
survived a second half fightback by the USA to emerge 25-21
winners.
The USA outscored Samoa 18-3 in a dominating display after
the break, but ultimately had neither the structure nor
composure in the build-up to unlock a well organised Samoa
defence with the regularity they needed.
Steady rain never dampened either sides’ desire to play
running rugby. Considering the conditions, the handling was
commendable, even if the ball in hand tactics seemed
slightly frenetic at times.
While they faded badly in the second half Samoa never looked
in any real danger of losing this match. They were
enterprising on attack, and the manner in which they tossed
the ball about told of a side who were no longer constricted
by the fear of failure.
The USA’s inability to match them in any facet of play
allowed them the freedom to explore the width of the pitch
and they took full advantage.
Their first try was a throwback to the 1995 World Cup, with
Alesana Tuilagi stampeding over Chris Wyles in much the same
way that Jonah Lomu had done to Mike Catt. Lome Fa’atau then
finished another expansive move before Kane Thompson rounded
off the try of the evening. The move was birthed in the
Samoa 22m area and featured superb support play before the
lock dived over.
USA flyhalf Mike Hercus slotted a penalty but at 22-3 Samoa
would have felt the game was wrapped up. The USA, however,
rallied after the break, scoring through flyer Takudzwa
Ngwenya, who profited from some woeful Samoan defence. Loki
Critchon and Mike Hercus traded penalties to make it 25-16
with five minutes to go.
Louis Stanfill then broke off the back of a scrum on the
Samoan 5m line to power over, but time had elapsed and the
Americans had to be content with a spirited yet fruitless
performance.
